There are so many things going on in our daily lives that it is easy to be totally consumed with the daily trials and tribulations of our jobs, child rearing, spouses and our financial situations. However, the topic of the food that we eat is central to our survival and is worth paying some attention to. We have to eat to live and we have a right and an obligation to know where our food is coming from.
The way food is grown, processed and distributed in the world has changed so dramatically in the last 50 years. These changes seem to have snuck up on most people and the changes continue to remain under the radar. Much of the reason for this is that many of the changes are for the good of most Americans. Who doesn’t like the seedless grape, the boneless chicken, the year round fruit, and the ears of corn the size of your forearm? Indeed we are getting more, bigger, less bruised, better colored food but there is a price that is being paid for it, both to Americans and to the world economy.
For those who missed the documentary Food Inc. (and many did) I urge you to check it out if you want to know more about where your food is coming from, how it is processed and who is controlling the supply. I won’t get into the details here, I simply urge you to watch the movie at home when you have the time. This site is about education and knowledge sharing and this is a video that everybody should see.
